The "Poodles" Breed

History

Etymologically, the French word "caniche" derives from "cane," a French term that indicates the female duck. In other countries, this term refers to splashing in the water. Originally, this dog was used in waterfowl hunting. It descends from the Barbet, from which it has retained many characteristics. In 1743, it was called "la caniche": the female Barbet. Later on, the Barbet and the Poodle became increasingly different. Breeders strove to obtain original subjects with uniform color. The Poodle became very popular as a companion dog, for its sweet, cheerful, and loyal character, but also for its four sizes and different colors that everyone can choose according to their preference.

General Appearance

A medium-sized dog, with a characteristic curly, wavy, or corded coat. The appearance is of an intelligent animal, constantly alert, active, harmoniously built, giving the impression of elegance and pride.

Features

The Barbet is a breed of dog that includes very different varieties in terms of SIZES and coats.

The recognized sizes are 4: TOY - NANO - MEDIUM - LARGE MOLE, in recent years, however, we hear more and more about MINI TOY and TEACUP(click on the size to learn more)

The coat colors allowed in Italy are 5: WHITE - BLACK - GRAY (SILVER)FULVO (RED) - BROWN - from 1/08/2024 the standard will provide for the recognition of the Phantom - Tuxedo - Particolor colors under the nomenclature "other colors"

All Barbets share characteristics of their nature: joy, great intelligence, strong attachment to the family. This makes them perfect companion dogs, and their protective instinct also makes them excellent guard dogs. They are suitable for inexperienced owners and also for children, as they are generally gentle and easy to train. They love to play and need to move a lot to expend their great energy. They require regular grooming to always keep their coat beautiful.

Nutrition

🐩 The poodle, like all dogs, is a carnivore, in nature it would feed on prey.

For this reason, his diet should be mainly based on bioavailable animal proteins: meat 🥩.

What's up?

he would hunt prey for himself and his offspring

would begin to feed from the stomach and offal:

the most humid parts;

rich in noble proteins

the stomach contains what the prey has eaten (carbohydrates and vegetables)

freshly hunted prey have a body temperature of around 40°, therefore a lukewarm meal.

What would you like and should find in the bowl?

🐾 a warm meal
🐾 a hydrated meal
🐾 with at least 69% noble meat and small percentages of cereals and vegetables

What can we choose to satisfy him?

the homemade diet formulated by a veterinary nutritionist
A ready-made, balanced quality stew, without chemical additives, without appetizers, without slaughter waste, only composed of meat, vegetables and cereals.

What are you waiting for?

1️⃣ Hydration:
the water contained in the stew or in the housewife is the cooking water of the meat, rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals.
2️⃣ Nutritional and protein intake:
the croquette needs a lot of starches and flours to maintain its characteristic shape. Therefore, even with quality ones, the protein intake is limited and all the nutrients are lost in the dehydration process.
3️⃣ Emotional satisfaction:
thanks to the heat and hydration the dogs can smell and taste the meat and this makes them happy to eat.
4️⃣ Variability in the bowl:
Dogs, like us, should not eat the same thing for their entire lives.

Our breeding is always attentive and in constant search of what is best for our 4-legged friends, for these reasons, after study and analysis, we have decided to embrace the mission of Team Branco, the first group of veterinarians, nutritionists, naturopaths , biologists and behavioral professionals who
they follow hundreds of dogs and cats and breeders throughout the natural feeding journey.

This turns into coaching and consultancy for us and the families of our puppies at no cost and is reflected in all our puppies and breeders through their psycho-physical state of health; a dog satisfied with eating well is a happy and healthy dog.

Health

The Barbet is normally a healthy and long-lived dog, especially when compared to other breeds, but it also has pathologies that affect him more or less frequently, it is good to know them in order to prevent them with genetic tests, or to treat them when needed.

Rabies - Distemper - Contagious hepatitis - Parvovirus - Leptospirosis - Kennel cough

are the infectious diseases for which vaccination prophylaxis is carried out starting from 6 weeks of age, rely on a good veterinarian.

Typical breed pathologies:

Hip dysplasia

affects the coxo-femoral joint, indicates a malformation of the femoral head that does not fit properly into the pelvic cavity intended to contain it, resulting in wear and erosion of the articular cartilages causing instability, more or less severe pelvic misalignment;

Patellar luxation

is a congenital and hereditarily transmissible condition that mainly affects small sizes in which the knee head (patella) comes out of its anatomical position.

Dogs show obvious limping and there are 4 degrees of severity to define the malformation;

Legg-Perthes disease

is a pathology of the femoral head that causes deterioration or flattening of the head or neck of the femur, usually found between 5 and 8 months of age and is evident with limping and joint pain, treatment is surgical;

Orthopedic visits can be performed to prevent the presence of these issues in breeding dogs, this reduces the chances but does not exclude that the offspring may develop them.

Epilepsy

generally manifests within the dog's first 3 years of life, the seizures last a few minutes causing more or less severe limb contractions, loss of consciousness and organic fluids, the affected dog can live a normal life following established treatments;

Sebaceous adenitis

is a rare disease that affects the sebaceous glands probably hereditary, symptoms may occur between 18 months and 9 years with skin thickening, dandruff, scaling and hair loss with possible secondary infections and malodorous skin;

Von Willebrand disease

is caused by a deficiency of von Willebrand factor (one of the elements that allow blood to clot) can cause prolonged or excessive bleeding in case of wounds, it is a hereditary defect;

Degenerative myelopathy

is a serious condition that affects the dog's spinal cord and causes degeneration and eventual paralysis of the hind limbs, this neurologic condition is hereditary;

Neonatal encephalopathy

is an inherited developmental brain disease, affected puppies are small and weak, those who survive the first week develop ataxia and tremors throughout the body;

Progressive retinal atrophy prcd-PRA

is an inherited disease that is reflected in various forms, causes degeneration of the retina cells in the eye. Night blindness occurs first. Subsequently there is a deterioration of the cones, resulting in complete blindness of the animal under optimal lighting conditions such as daylight. The disease typically manifests in early childhood or early adulthood. However, the onset time can be variable and depends on the dog's breed;

There are tests that help identify subjects carrying genetic defects, the carrier subject does not show the disease but carries the gene, if 2 carrier subjects reproduce the gene will manifest in the puppy, if a carrier subject reproduces with a healthy subject, there will be healthy puppies carriers and non-carriers of the gene.

Those who decide to breed have the moral and ethical obligation to perform these tests even in the absence of a pedigree,

those who buy have the obligation to ask for them!
